Why Mold Is Considered Bad

Mold is a fungus that prefers to grow in damp conditions.  It can make its way into your home in a variety of ways.  There are thousands of different kinds of mold, some of which can travel through the air and make their way in through open doorways, windows, or vents.  Other kinds of mold may be tracked in on your shoes, clothing, or pets.

Where Mold Grows

Mold can grow in a variety of places. The environments it prefers to inhabit are generally damp areas, such as leaky roofs, attics, or windows.  It’s also capable of growing in drywall, insulation, or carpets if there is enough moisture in those places.  It can also grow in organic matter, such as food or wood.

Dangers of Leaving Mold in Your Home

While mold may seem relatively harmless, it is important to address it as it can cause health issues, especially in infants and children.  Even in healthy individuals, the World Health Organization has found that mold has the potential to cause throat irritation, stuffiness, irritated eyes, and potentially even hives or rashes.  In individuals with asthma or allergies, it can significantly worsen both conditions.  If an individual has any pre-existing lung illnesses, the complications from inhaling mold can be even more severe, potentially even requiring hospitalization. In children, exposure to mold can cause asthma, particularly in those genetically predisposed to developing it. Therefore, it is important to address any mold that is found before it causes problems.

How to Prevent Mold

The most important thing you can do to prevent mold growth is to purchase a dehumidifier.  Keeping as much moisture out of the air as you can is very beneficial to preventing the growth of mold.  Other things to keep an eye on are leaks that could be letting moisture into the house, as well as cleaning up any spilled liquids, especially ones that can set into carpet or other soft materials that can trap the moisture and take a long time to dry.  Another important step you can take to prevent mold is ensuring your home has proper ventilation.  This, in conjunction with a dehumidifier, is the best defense from preventing mold.
